Candidates must possess Level I trauma experience. Admission to the

attempts allowed. If failed, candidates will be unable to work
within the specified regions. Travel teams must have their own
vehicles. Natural hair color is required; facial piercings are not
allowed. Men must be clean-shaven for fit testing. Day 1 includes a
pass/fail exam that entails handling specific nursing competencies.
All nurses are expected to complete skills labs for Foley catheter
insertion and central line dressing changes. There are specific
skill expectations for different departments, particularly
regarding sterile field maintenance. Candidates indicating they
lack competency in these areas may not be a good fit. In addition
to skills labs, there will be education regarding lifts,
restraints, and wound care, recognizing that equipment and policies
may vary. Unit size is 24 beds, with preferred certifications
including CCRN. Nurse-to-patient ratios can range from 1:1 to 1:2,
primarily 1:1. Charge nurses will not have patient assignments.
Additional support is provided by patient care technicians on day
and night shifts. Weekend work requires three shifts within a
four-week schedule. Holidays will rotate among staff. Scrub color
required is navy. Telemetry is monitored using Phillips equipment.
An intensivist is available during the day and on call at night.
There is no dedicated IV team; therefore, strong IV skills are
essential. Respiratory therapy and pharmacy support are available
24/7. Shifts run from 7 PM to 7 AM. Travelers may be required to
float to other intensive care units and telemetry units, with a
patient ratio of 4:1 on telemetry. Travelers will float before
permanent staff when needed. Orientation includes two days on the
floor. Common diagnoses include cardiac surgical recovery, IABP
management, CRRT treatments, lung transplants, and various thoracic
procedures. This unit has a high acuity level. Candidates with IABP
and CABG experience can be assigned complex patients. A high number
of bedside procedures are conducted, including bronchoscopy and
epidural placements. The hospital reserves the right to cancel up
to four shifts during a 13-week assignment. The charting system
used is Cerner.
